My first year of teaching a colleague gave me a poster that had this Japanese proverb on it: “Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.” I walked into an empty classroom that August, with nothing of my own (and no student work to display yet), and I hung this new gift in the center of the back wall. It was something that I saw all day, every day for my first years of teaching, and even after my walls were filled, it remained one of my favorite classroom items. After many years in the classroom, and now other educational work and interests that have taken me outside of the classroom, I still believe that words and pictures on a page are brought to life by inspirational people and fantastic resources.
